Did you ever notice how people in Hollywood seem to know other people in Hollywood? I can’t tell you how many famous actors have parents that are actors and as you continue to look further into the family tree, you see more famous people coming out of the woodwork.
Marisa Tomei is one of those individuals. She is an Oscar-winning actress and she just learned something very interesting. She is a close blood relative of another big star.
Tomei was busy taping the ‘Finding Your Roots’ series for PBS when she made the discovery. People on that show look into their pasts with the help of DNA analysis and genealogists.
Instead of digging up some strange ancestor from her past, she learned she was related to Julianne Moore. It turns out that they are distant cousins.
“Julianne?” a shocked Tomei says on camera. “Julianne? Julie? You know we went to school together?”
It seems that they are more than relatives. They both went to Boston University together. They were also both cast in the movie, Crazy, Stupid Love.
“Oh, I can’t wait to tell her!” an excited Tomei said.
The DNA analysis revealed that there was “an identical stretch of DNA” that both she and Moore shared. As it turns out, they were all surprised because Tomei has an all-Italian ancestry but Moore was not aware of any Italian ancestors.
Tomei called the news an ‘incredible gift’ as she shared it with the world on Instagram.
“I KNEW WE WERE ALIKE!” Moore said. “[Marisa Tomei] is my COUSIN!! OMG I’m so excited,” she added.
This isn’t the first surprise uncovered on Finding Your Roots. They also discovered that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is a distant cousin of comedian and actor, Larry David.
