In the last several years, there has been a debate raging over the definition of beauty, and beauty standards. More women are feeling comfortable enough to go for more natural looks, whether it’s ditching the makeup or the razors.
And now, Emily Ratajkowski is also rocking a more natural look when she was featured in the September issue of Harper’s BAZAAR, with her natural armpits. She also wrote a personal essay in which she explained there is much more to her gender identity than one would think.
Ratajkowski began her essay with, “I’m a cis white woman. I’m well aware of the privilege I receive as someone who is heteronormative, and I don’t pretend to act like my identity hasn’t made some things easier for me.”
The 28-year-old is a self-proclaimed “staunch feminist,” and has admitted that she’s not too thrilled when others describe her as “hyper femme.” To her, this implies that her femininity was an extreme and deliberate choice, a description that she’s not comfortable with since she can’t relate to it.
She said, “In my day-to-day life, I was not aware of being femme or masc or anything but just me.”

“Sure, I’m positive that most of my early adventures investigating what it meant to be a girl were heavily influenced by misogynistic culture. Hell, I’m also positive that many of the ways I continue to be “sexy” are heavily influenced by misogyny. But it feels good to me, and it’s my damn choice, right? Isn’t that what feminism is about—choice?” @emrata writes about exploring what it means to be hyper feminine for our September 2019 issue. Tap the link in bio to read more. However, Ratajkowski has reflected and says that there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with being “occasionally hyper-feminine” and she embraces it empowerment of her sexuality. She continued, “I feel powerful when I’m feeling myself, and sometimes feeling myself means wearing a miniskirt. Sometimes it means wearing a giant hoodie and sweats.”
That led her to make the decision to sport her armpit hair in the photoshoot – in order to prove the point that she has the right to express herself however she likes. She commented, “For me, body hair is another opportunity for women to exercise their ability to choose…On any given day, I tend to like to shave, but sometimes letting my body hair grow out is what makes me feel sexy.”
Keep doing you, Emily!
