While most of us consider the experience of dog ownership to be a rewarding one, there are those who find it to be more challenging than expected. Most owners want to keep their dogs forever but there are others who run into obstacles that are too difficult to ignore. When times get hard, this is when animal shelters come in handy and they are there to keep us from making any rash decision.
When Shell arrived at the Stray Rescue of St. Louis, she came with a note attached. The contents of this note will absolutely break your heart. Her former owner Crystal had been through so much. Shell was first owned by her mother and she was forced to give the dog up after having a massive stroke. Crystal was happy to take over but eventually, she was diagnosed with cancer.
“To Stray Rescue:
I am writing you cause I need you to take my dog Shell. My mother adopted Shell from Stray Rescue around 2009-2010 … In 2012 she had a massive stroke and now has Alzheimers. So in 2012 Shell came to live with me. I’ve been fighting cancer for a few months and if you’re reading this I lost my battle. I need for my baby girl to be taking [sic] care of in a home with one person.
Shell is a very sweet little girl. She’s been threw [sic] a lot so she has trouble with trust in the beginning. She loves to cuddle but doesn’t like to be carried. She’s very smart.”
This left her in a position where she was unable to take care of the dog any longer. Crystal tried her best to fight the disease but her note details the struggles she experienced. Eventually, the pain was too much for her to endure and she surrendered. Once she had moved on to a better place, Shell was going to need a home and that’s what the note was all about.
It is sad to find out that Crystal was unable to deal with the pain she was going through. The physical and mental toll that her treatments took on her was more than she could withstand. The shelter was determined to make sure that Shell found a home in her absence. A wonderful lady saw Shell’s story on television and decided to offer her home to the dog.
“We have a happy ending to Shell’s tragic story. As most of you know, we received a heart breaking letter on Monday. Shell came to Stray Rescue after her owner passed away.
Then, a wonderful lady saw the news segment and knew it was time for her to adopt after losing her Stray Rescue dog Trenton, in July. She just felt so drawn to her.
Wasting no time, she filled out an application and was here the very next morning. The two of them hit it off and she knew it was definitely the right time.
She says Shell is already running the house, and that they are inseparable. We are honored to have fulfilled the final wish of her Mom, who is no longer with us. We promise she will be spoiled for the rest of her life.”
This is the happy ending that Shell truly deserves. She is already adjusting beautifully to her new home and is very happy with her new mother. Shell may not have been dealt the best hand to start her life but that does not mean that she will have to live in sadness forever. By taking the time to make sure Shell was going to be all right before passing on, Crystal has gone above and beyond.
No matter how hard things may get, we can always rely on animal shelters to assist us when our pals are in need of new homes. There is no reason to abandon a dog and expect the rest of the world to pick up your slack. Let the professionals come to your aid!
